Take 44: Tipping Tips

You know, I’m not a fan of tipping.

I don’t mind rewarding someone for exceptional service. But I think good service should be the norm, don’t you?

I mean, if you’re at a restaurant, you’re not eating for free! You’re paying for your food, its preparation, for sitting at a table, and for your food being delivered to you.

How your food is delivered is an important part of your experience, true. And it will have a big impact on whether you recommend that restaurant to your friends or not.

But just as branding is the responsibility of a business, so is customer service the responsibility of the restaurant. If they want me to have an amazing dining experience and tell all my friends about it, why would they ask me to pay extra for that?

Don’t get me wrong! It’s not that I think waiting staff don’t deserve the money! It’s that I think it should be an automatic part of their salary, and that their good service should be an automatic part of the job description. Not an added extra.

I mean, when you’re shopping at H&M, you don’t pay separately for the heating, the cleaner, the sales staff, or the security person, all those things are already wrapped up in the price of your pretty new top. And that’s how I think it should work in restaurants.

I’ve heard of many restaurants (especially in the US, but also in the UK) that pay their staff below the minimum hourly wage because they know clients will leave tips and that they can use the tips to pay the rest of the wage. I think this is terrible. If tipping happens at all, it should be a reward to the individual you want to reward. Not part of the company’s financial plan.

(Guess who once worked as a waitress!)

Now, I’m not a scrooge. I do tip. In fact, tipping in the Czech Republic is much easier than in the UK. You just round the total up a bit. And I really don’t mind that at all.

I guess I just feel that tipping should be a special reward for exceptional service, not a socially enforced rule that doesn’t really end up benefiting the people it should.

Okay, I’m done.

Mic drop.
