Being a freelancer is wonderful! You’re free, as the name suggests, to choose what you do and when. You get to do the projects you want to do when it suits you best.
Got a picnic planned for Wednesday afternoon? Or your mum visiting for a week? Or perhaps you just need an extra long lie-in? No worries, you can move your schedule around to fit your life. Working late into the night. Or getting up early. Or getting all your jobs handed in ahead of schedule so you can spend time re-exploring Prague with Mum.
That’s not to say it’s easy. There is always plenty to do. But you get to do it when it’s convenient.
You sometimes have to accept projects that don’t thrill you. But most of the time you’re doing work that inspires you.
Sometimes things are great! With lots of work coming in. But sometimes, things go quiet. And it can be a bit difficult. So it’s very important to do as much work as you can, as quickly as you can so that your clients keep coming back for more.
So, one day you might sleep till noon, but then you’ll want to work till midnight. Or you might get a couple of days free to spend with Mum, but only because you worked all weekend.
Still, it’s great. Especially because you’re usually passionate (or at least interested) in what you’re doing. And there’s endless tea to get you through the day. But…
Freelancers do have a curse: guilt. You may really deserve an afternoon off to spend at a picnic, but there’s always that little feeling that you should be working. It keeps scratching at the surface. Even if you work a full 8-hour day, you keep thinking about how much more there is to do. I can’t remember the last time I had a weekend. An actual weekend with two full days off. Or a vacation! Sigh.
But finally, I’m doing it! Lenka and I leave for England next week!
We’re both freelancers so we both know the freelancer guilt curse well. If we ignored it, we’d probably never book a vacation, ever! So instead of booking a vacation, we’ve booked a WORKation! We won’t have to pretend we’re not thinking about work. We will simply do some work while we’re there!
I mean, Lights Camera English doesn’t even feel like work. But at least as the plane takes off next Thursday, I can sink deep into the reclining leather seat and breathe guilt free as I drifted into sleep.
