I have to admit, when I heard that I would be away for 3 full weeks, I was a little bit worried. I really thought I’d be racing to get home again. I’d be away from my friends, my neighbourhood, my routine. I’d miss home.
And, okay, I sort of do. But nowhere near as much as I thought I would.
It helps that my cat came with me. But living in hotels isn’t as bad as I thought. It’s so nice that nothing is really my responsibility. If the shower doesn’t drain or the internet doesn’t work, somebody fixes it. I get clean towels and tiny little shower gel bottles wherever I go. Breakfast is ready and the tea is hot when I get up… whatever time that is. And someone else does the cleaning… every day! In fact, the film production company even organises taxis and trips on our days off. So I pretty much just have to wake up each day. And the rest happens by itself.
The one thing I really do miss, though? A kettle. I had no idea how much I use my kettle. Okay, I had some idea. I drink tea all day long. I have a mug in my hand before I wake up and long after I fall asleep. And I miss it!
And the other surprising discovery I’ve made is how much I miss being alone. Now… I’m not a loner. I’m actually rather social. I love having brunch or dinner with friends. I always join parties and go for drinks after rehearsals. But I also get a good amount of time alone. To work. To think. To snuggle with Misty. To be still. I’m not used to being surrounded by people all the time.
Don’t get me wrong, the people here are all absolutely lovely! And I really enjoy spending time with them. But last night I walked back to the hotel from the restaurant alone and felt a sense of peace wash over me. It does feel good to be alone with your thoughts sometimes.
So, I’ve got another 10 days on this trip and now I have two goals:
- Add some alone time to each day
- Buy a travel kettle
