I’m terrible. I rarely go on vacation.
If I do, it’s usually for a long weekend. I never go anywhere exotic or very far away. It’s not easy to take time off when you work for yourself. Ha! I realise that sounds like nonsense. Yes, I can take as much time off as I want to and I don’t have to ask a boss… but then who’s going to pay the rent? I don’t get paid holiday. What if I get sick later in the year and can’t work? I don’t get financial help from an employer. I have to manage everything myself and plan for the unexpected.
But that’s not the only reason it’s hard to take time off. My calendar is crazy: completely empty for two weeks, then 6 days of solid work. But right at the last minute, everything can change, so I need to be ready to adjust my calendar at any time.
However, the main reason I don’t go on holidays, is that I simply love my work. I love what I do.
You know, last weekend I scheduled a whole weekend without work. I told myself I was not allowed to even open the laptop. What did I do?… nothing. Literally… What do people do when they have time off?? I mean, I read a book and watched some great TV, but I soon got bored and found myself staring at my closed laptop aching to learn some Japanese, or prepare next week’s webinar, or write the transcript for the next Lights Camera English video. So even though I wasn’t working, I didn’t really relax at all. I was at home. And all the little home stresses were still there. And that little ball of stress inside just kept scratching at the surface, reminding me of all the other things I could (or should) be doing.
But sometimes you just have to take a complete break, even if you love what you do. You have to put normal life on hold and take a holiday. You need to get away from the usual things you do and wake up in a new place, with different people, and a fantastic adventure waiting for you.
It’s a bit like hitting a pause button on life, so that your mind and body can breathe a little and regain some perspective.
So that’s what Abbey and I are going to do. We’re going to England and I can’t wait. I’m certain I won’t be bored, so I’m not even going to think about taking my laptop. I’m just going to immerse myself in everything British and forget about everything else.
Then, when I do get home, I will feel so refreshed and relaxed, that I will be much more efficient with my time when I get back into work. Which means it won’t be that long before I can book another holiday!
