Take 33: Online dating

I can’t believe Lenka is online dating! Well, she swears she isn’t. She says she’s just helping „a friend“.

Online dating is something I’ve never really understood.

Firstly, I’m not sure I could trust someone’s profile. I mean, they want to attract someone, right? So they’re never going to write „not very good looking“ or „I sometime have psychopathic tendencies“.

And apparently it’s a fact that people lie all the time! One study found that around half of the profiles contain lies about appearance or jobs. As I consider honesty a key quality in a relationship, this isn’t a great way to start.

Secondly, it becomes all about how attracted you are to someone’s photo. That’s the reason you stop swiping, after all. Considering people like this must make you very judgemental, comparing one photo to another… And if it’s all about attraction, then there must be a lot of people on there just looking for sex. But how can you tell? It puts you in a vulnerable position if you’re looking for a relationship and all they want is a bit of fun.

I’ve heard too many stories about scams on these websites, too. And you do provide quite a lot of personal data, which puts you at risk.

Moreover, online dating sites have a horrible rate of success. Just one-third of those with profiles actually go on dates with people they meet online. Relationships started online are 28% more likely to fail in the first year than couples who actually meet in person. And online couples are 3 times more likely to get divorced!

But despite all this, new dating sites seem to appear every week! So a lot of people must be using them. I guess it’s a sign of our times. We are all very busy people. We work. We have families. We have everyday lives to manage. When is there time to find someone special? In the canteen at work while you’re cursing the person who took the last tea bag? In the queue at the supermarket you popped into for ginger and tampons? On the bus that is so crammed full of people you can’t move?

So I guess it does kind of make sense. The rest of our lives is moving online, so why not love?

I wonder how it’s going for Lenka’s friend… 😉
