Take 26: Moving Home

T26 Moving ContUp button

I’m very excited to see Abbey’s new flat this weekend. She says that it’s sunny and cosy. I love places like that.

Apparently, moving home is considered to be an extremely stressful life event. I can’t say that Abbey looked particularly stressed out when I saw her, but it did sound like her week was rather demanding. But now that she’s moved, she seems really content!

I admire people who aren’t afraid to uproot and try something new. Abbey only moved across town; she’ll still see all her friends and do the things she likes in the places she loves. But before she made this move, she moved to the Czech Republic from England. That’s a little more drastic. People who move their entire lives to a new country, to live amongst new people, explore new places, try new things, and experience new cultures—that’s very brave. And I’m sure more than a little stressful.

I have family, so I’m not considering doing a major move anytime soon. But actually, I can’t even imagine moving across town!

I love my flat. It’s bigger than Abbey’s but then one of my sons still lives with me… which means it’s often a bit messier, too. But I love it. It’s not perfect, it’s not luxurious, it’s just mine. There is no door I’d rather open when I’ve had a long, hard day than the one to my home, and it welcomes me like a hug.

Isn’t it funny how important our homes are to us? There is a lovely British saying: An Englishman’s home is his castle. It means that our home is like sacred territory and we will defend it.

Well that makes sense. It’s the place you feel safest, where you live through or deal with the most important events in your life, and where you feel you can close your eyes and sleep.

My home is where I brought up my boys, where we fought about wet towels on the floor in the bathroom and made up over chocolate ice-cream on the sofa. It’s where my friends and family know where to find me and come to celebrate the fun things in life.

My home is packed full of memories of all flavours. And it’s my favourite place on earth.
