I recently moved into a new home. I had boxes and boxes of stuff! How?
I don’t buy a lot of things; I just don’t throw anything away. It seems I’m not alone in this.
Why do we keep things? Even if we don’t like them?!
Perhaps it’s just a case of „out of sight, out of mind“. Or perhaps we don’t know how to get rid of them, or never even really considered that we could. Perhaps we’re afraid of wasting things, I mean, we spent money on that! Let’s not pollute the environment! What if we need it one day? What if it’s not ours and the owner wants it back? We’re saving it for a special occasion. Perhaps the item has sentimental value. Maybe it’s just not the right time to get rid of it. I mean, it’s not disturbing us (sitting quietly behind the piano), so it needn’t be a priority, right? There isn’t really a deadline, is there? Besides, that was a gift, we can never throw that away.
Perhaps we just don’t know where to begin. Or perhaps we’re more afraid of finishing?
We’re so used to our spaces, our minds, our memories, and ourselves being full of the things. It’s scary to imagine our lives without the things that we think define it. But do they? Really? Perhaps we just need a little healthy mind shift. I am not my things. I no longer want to carry the burden of things around (goodness knows I have enough to worry about already). I want to live lightly.
Hm. Easier said than done…. but… Lenka has done it. And she’s happier than ever!
Perhaps it’s time we gave it a try. So pick up the first thing you see and tell me: does it spark joy?
